The Interview

Q: What was the role of music in the early years of your life?

My mom and older brother were both musicians. My mom was in a band, still is, and my brother who unfortunately passed away was the drummer in her band as well as his own. He was a super talented musician, could play any instrument and had a great voice. I have always loved making music even just messing around etc. although I was a bit too ADHD etc to sit down and try to learn proper music techniques etc. I would mess around on the drums and piano throughout my life but never decided to get serious until November 2022.

Q: Who inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

Q: How did you learn to sing/write/play?

I grew up with a basic ability to play things by ear (which was a VERY slow process as I didn't know any chords, keys etc). I finally decided to take music production serious November of 2022 and invested into an online music course as well as a few basic piano lessons so I could learn some technique and some solid foundation.

Q: What was your first music teacher like?

I learned a lot and still do from him. Alex Rome from YouTube is who I decided to invest with by taking his course. He has a great way of teaching concepts that work for me and are easy to understand. No matter what skill or knowledge I had in certain areas he was able to fill in the gaps I was missing as well as show me ways to elevate and improve what I had goin on. Still have a long way to go but I'm stoked I found him, it's been super helpful.

Q: What is the story behind your band/artist name?

Chicken Chaser is a nickname in a game I played as a kid that the main character gets called. I thought it was funny, ended up putting a big sticker of it on my car in High School and kinda just stuck with it. It is a silly name, and when I decided to get serious about making music I debated changing it but ultimately thought it best represented who I am so I moved forward with it.

Q: What was the first concert that you ever went to?

Oooo it was a long time ago. It was either Good Charlotte or Van Halen. I can't quite remember which was first.

Definitely heavily EDM influenced. Maybe more on the chill side.

Q: Describe your creative process?

I typically start with a chord progression using a regular piano sound as I understand the piano best. If I have vocals to work with I build the song around the vocals using a piano, structure it out and start to change sounds based on the vibe of the vocals and the feelings I get with the chords. I'll then go into transitions and my best take at ear candy etc. I'm still in the process of improving a lot of things and a big part of that as well is mixing and mastering. I don't quite have a process in place that works best yet for that.

Q: What is your main inspiration?

My brother is who inspired and still inspires me to create music. Even though he's been gone since 2006 I can still remember all the times watching him and listening to him just kill it with any musical things he put effort into.

Q: What musician/artist do you admire the most?

It's tough to pick just one. I would say for the longest time it has been deadmau5 and Armin Van Buuren.

Q: What is one message you would like to give to your fans?

Don't give up hope. Life is hard and full of ups and downs. Find something that brings you joy and make sure you put time into it. Even if it's just for your own well being and not something you share with others, you deserve to be happy and feel good.

Q: How would you describe your fans?

Still pretty new so I'd say I'm related to most of them haha but I would like to think they are people that appreciate the emotions that I try my best to portray in my songs.

Q: Do you create for yourself or for your fans?

I would say I am transitioning into making music for fans. Up until last year I only messed around with making beats or loops and never knew how to really make a song. Still have a ways to go but hopefully I can create music that will positively impact anyone who chooses to listen to it.

Q: Do you prefer to listen to music or create it?

I love listening to music, there is so much good music out there its crazy, what a time to be alive! And it always ends up inspiring me to create. So Its evenly both for me.

Q: Did your style evolve since the beginning of your career?

Yes mainly for the fact that I didn't have the know how etc to structure and create a song more or less and was limited heavily by experience and knowledge.

Q: Who do you see as your main competitor?

I haven't really looked at it in that mindset of having a competitor. I am quite the damn perfectionist and can get in my own way with a lot of things in life not just music. I would say probably myself haha

Q: Would you agree that it is very important to learn, study and understand old music and

music history?

Yes, I believe you can learn from all styles and era's.

Q: If you could have a musician tag along with you on tour for one month , who would you

choose?

Probably Armin Van Buuren

Q: What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

Having a creative outlet in life in general has improved my quality of life for sure. It is cathartic at times, inspiring, and it pushes me to learn and improve with always feels good at the end of the day.

Q: What skills are most useful in the music industry?

Hmmm not sure I'm qualified for that one haha but I would like to think experience is a skill that would be most useful in any industry. Someone with a lot of experience will have more success than someone with book knowledge but not life practice. Simply putting in the work and being consistent in your journey.

Q: How do you handle frequent travels and being away from home for long periods of time?

I'm a bigger dude so I don't love being in hotel beds for long periods of time. I definitely enjoy being in my own space but I can also be away from home for long periods of time as long as the reason I am away isn't a negative or miserable experience. I would think most people are probably in that boat haha

Q: How do you handle working evenings and nights?

It works great for me. I have a business I run during business hours so having nights to decompress and create is great for me.

Q: When was the last time you performed in front of a huge audience?

I have never performed in front of a huge audience. Maybe 50 people tops and I was playing the drums for one song haha

Q: Tell me about your best performance?

I have yet to perform live.

Q: Do you experience stress before going on stage?

Not applicable for me at this point in my life

Q: What would you do if the audience looked bored during your performance?

Honestly I would probably change things up. I do tend to improvise and go off script of things already so, since I haven't been in that situation that's my best guess.

Q: What is the biggest problem you have encountered in the journey of music?

Sometimes life things get very busy as I run a business and my wife has intense health issues. There are many times where I struggle to get in the practice and development with that consistent music progression.

Q: If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Making it more common and easy for small artists to be discovered. There is a lot of talent out there!

Q: Have you ever participated in any music competition?

Yes I did a remix competition for Aden Foyer when I first started the music course I invested in.

Q: What are your plans for the coming months?

To continue to release songs as I learn new techniques etc. I have quite a few things to improve and a lot of things to learn.

Q: Do you have any artistic collaboration plans?

Yes I have already collabed on 2 songs and have 2-3 more in the foreseeable future already planned.

Q: What does your typical day look like?

Running my business during regular hours, and taking time in the evening/ night to work on music etc.

Q: How do you think social media has changed the music industry?

It's created a platform that is very convenient and quick to get your name out there with the right promo plan and marketing especially for small artists.

Q: What does your typical weekend look like?

With the health issues my wife has had over the past couple years it is a lot of chilling inside with emphasis on music since last year.

Q: How do you balance the music and your other obligations-school, family, etc?

Music definitely takes a back seat to my wife's well being and our business as it is our main source of income. So I definitely am working to keep music a focus as well during the evening.

Q: What is the best gig you’ve ever played?

I haven't played a gig yet.

Q: What is the saddest song you've ever heard?

"Self Destruct" by Dustin BrockBank. It is a song about drug addiction from the point of view of the addict. Super sad. And since he was my brother it definitely is the saddest song for me.

Q: What are your interests outside of music?

Up until my knees went to hell it was skateboarding and gaming. Being out in nature is always a big interest. Playing games with my buddies I grew up with is always a good time. Anime is great. Been working to get my body and knees strong again to get back out doing the shit I used to do more like skating etc.
